DFA: No Filipinos affected in Chile quake
MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Thursday confirmed that there were no Filipinos affected in the 8.3 magnitude quake that hit central Chile.
“So far we have not received report of Filipinos affected by the earthquake in Chile,” DFA spokesman Charles Jose said in a text message.
Jose said there are over 300 Filipinos working and residing in the Latin American state.
Reports said at least five people were killed and 1 million residents have been evacuated from coastal areas due to the quake.
The magnitude 8.3 tremor triggered waves of up to 15 feet along the coast of Coquimbo region.
Due to tsunami alarm, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology also raised tsunami alerts in 20 provinces in the country but clarified that there is no evacuation in effect.
