POEA office in typhoon-ravaged Tacloban reopens

Louis Bacani - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The office of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) in Tacloban City has resumed its operations more than two weeks after Super Typhoon "Yolanda" slammed into the country.

In his Twitter account, POEA administrator Hans Leo Cacdac said four overseas Filipino workers were processed in Tacloban City on Tuesday, the first time since the typhoon ravaged the Leyte capital on November 8.

Tacloban City is among the areas hit hardest by Yolanda, which killed more than 5,500 people including 4,746 from Leyte alone.

The super typhoon devastated communities with its tsunami-like storm surges, forcing some government offices such as POEA in the affected areas to close.

Yolanda, considered as among the strongest typhoon ever recorded, affected nearly 11 million people in nine provinces, particularly those in Eastern Visayas, while 1,757 remain missing to date.
