No tsunami threat from quake between Fiji, Tonga

HONOLULU - The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii says there is no threat of a tsunami from a magnitude-6.9 earthquake that struck off the coast of Tonga and Fiji.

The quake was centered nearly 200 miles northwest of Nuku'alofa, Tonga, and 270 miles (434 kilometers) southeast of Suva, Fuji, just before 8 a.m. Sunday local time. Tonga and Fiji are about 5,000 miles (8,000 kilometers) southwest of the Hawaiian islands.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 258 miles below the earth's surface.
