Bolivia trial begins in French tourist case

The Philippine Star

TRINIDAD, Bolivia  — Four people have gone on trial in Bolivia on charges of murder and kidnapping stemming from the 2010 disappearance of two young French tourists.

The trial in the disappearance of 25-year-old Jeremie Bellanger and 23-year-old Fannie Blancho began Monday in the northern city of Trinidad with relatives of the victims in the courtroom.

The parents of Bellanger moved to Bolivia determined to solve the case after local police appeared to make little progress.

The two young people disappeared in the small Amazon city of Guayaramerin in Bolivia's northeast.

Police say they were last seen on the ranch of Jaime Martinez, the main suspect in the case.

Their bodies have not been found.
