About 800 bodies recovered in Bangladesh building collapse
DHAKA -- Around 800 bodies have been retrieved in Bangladesh building collapse till Wednesday evening as the grim recovery work continued fortnight after the country's worst industrial tragedy.
The rescuers continued their relentless efforts to search for more bodies as the stench of decaying bodies still remained around the ruins of the sandwiched building that crumbled like a pack of cards on April 24 at about 8:30 a.m. local time.
Local television reports put death toll of the tragedy at 803 on Wednesday when more than two dozen bodies were recovered.
But the authorities confirmed to Xinhua 766 deaths till 2:00 p. m. Wednesday.
Deputy Commissioner or Administrative Chief of Dhaka district Sheikh Yusuf Harun told Xinhua that "the death toll of the building collapse has risen to 766 till 2:00 p.m. Wednesday."
Following the cracks detected just one day before the man-made disaster, the workers were evacuated but on the next morning none has bothered about the cracks when officials of the factories forced the workers to join workplaces for making clothing for many major global brands.
Some 15 days into the one of the world's worst industrial disasters, Bangladesh authorities can't say the number of people who remain missing. Many family members still await bodies and were seen around the scene of the collapsed building.
Rescuers have pulled alive more than 2,437 people after the eight-storey building Rana Palaza crumbled.
