Over 416,000 Syrian refugees in Lebanon: UN

The Philippine Star

BEIRUT (Xinhua) - The number of Syrians displaced thus far into Lebanon has reached 416,000, an increase of about 14, 000 in one week, said the UN High Commission for Refugees on Saturday in a weekly report.

The report said while more than 130,000 refugees are still waiting to complete their registration process with the UNHCR in order to receive aid, the number of registered refugees has passed the mark of 280,000.

There are currently about 120,000 refugees registered in northern Lebanon, some 105,000 in the Bekaa region, 32,000 in Beirut and Mount Lebanon, and around 22,000 in southern Lebanon, said the report.

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres said the number of Syrian refugees in Lebanon has passed 10 percent of Lebanon's population, and could be a burden on the Lebanese government.

Lebanon has appealed in January for $370 million from Arab countries to help it meet the need of the Syrian refugees.
