Ex-German president charged with corruption

The Philippine Star

BERLIN (AP) — Hannover prosecutors say they have filed corruption charges against Germany's former president Christian Wulff over alleged favors that prompted his resignation last year.

The move Friday comes after Wulff rejected an offer to settle his case for a fine, saying that he'd rather fight to clear his name in court.

Wulff resigned in February 2012 following a barrage of allegations, including favors allegedly received when he was Lower Saxony's governor before being elected president in 2010.

Prosecutors say the charges are related specifically to about 4,000 euros in hotel and entertainment costs allegedly paid by German film producer David Groenewold for Wulff and his family during a visit to Oktoberfest in Munich in 2008.

They say Wulff then helped Groenewold try to raise support for a film project.
