The trend: Bright-colored accessories
About the trend: Maybe it has something to do with Nikki Minaj and her rainbow locks. Or maybe we’re just tired of looking somber all the time. Whatever it is, brights are the new black. And instead of the usual primaries, we’ve been seeing a lot of neon; Stabilo greens, the hottest pinks, saturated yellows and blinding aquas have put the fun back into color combining. These days, however, the merriment goes beyond color-blocked ensembles into accessories. Bracelets, scarves, hats, bags and shoes have taken on those fluorescent shades usually reserved for reflective sportswear or traffic enforcers.
Why you should wear it: The weather has gone schizo — one moment hot and sunny as Katy Perry at her best, and then gloomy and Kirsten Stewart-morose the next — and wearing brights is the best way to deal with this extremity. It’s really a win-win situation: the bold trendy you steps out when the sun’s showing and then the courageous trooper who refuses to be the harbinger of blah on umbrella days.
How to wear it: The safest way to wear bold-colored accessories is to pair them with neutrals. Blacks and whites set off vivids the best. For the last few seasons, however, pairing a bright color with an even brighter shade has become normal, putting to the test our color-matching abilities and outing the color-blind. Neons generally go well with other neons. Putting two colors together is sweet. Three is a bit tricky. Four, though, is definitely pushing it, i.e. not advised.
