Tanghalang Ateneo (TA) is the student theatre company of the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU). It blends several theatrical traditions, which include the dedication of the salon de actos during the Spanish period, the eloquence of the Ateneo Dramatics Guild in the American period, the joie de vivre of the Ateneo Players Theatre in the 50s, and the aesthetic sensibility of the Ateneo Experimental Theatre in the 60s; all of these since its inception in 1969.
TA has developed from a fledgling band of student players to one of the country's leading non-professional theatre companies. Its repertoire of plays is challenging and unlike those of similar theatre companies. These include world classics, with a special affection for Shakespeare; Filipino originals, often penned by noted playwright and teacher, Ricky Abad; as well as documentary texts turned into theatre pieces. Its productions lean towards the conceptual and the elegant, and its performances noted for their thought, generosity and energy.
