CEBU, Philippines — Cebuana showbiz veterans, singer Dulce and actress Pilar Pilapil, were honored by the Cebu City government at the 2024 Sugbuanong Bahandi Awards for their contributions to the arts.

Held at Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino on August 27, they were among five honorees that included playwright Orlando Magno, fashion designer Philip Rodriguez, and visual artist Celso Pepito.

I am very honored that they have recognized our achievements, especially since it s coming from fellow Cebuanos, Pilapil, 73, told The FREEMAN.

At least they didn t wait for us to pass away before honoring us because there have been many awards in the past where recipients were honored posthumously.

The ceremony was a culmination for this years Cebu City Arts Month, which was first held in 2023. Acting Cebu City Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia cited in his speech his father, former Cebu City Mayor Alvin Garcia, as the reason for his deep appreciation of the arts.

This is a celebration of identity, heritage, and culture through artistry. How else do we celebrate our identity if not through the arts and our artists? said Garcia.

Our awardees are chosen not only for their talent but also for their extraordinary commitment and dedication to their craft. As we revel in their artistry, let us remember the importance of preserving and promoting arts and culture, and instilling pride in being a Cebuano for future generations of artists.

Dulce, 63, who performed at the event and delivered an acceptance speech on behalf of the awardees, praised Garcia for his support of Cebuano artists.

Acting Mayor Garcia is brilliant for supporting our arts and culture. Every government leader needs to appreciate the arts. It moves people and inspires them. When you feel inspired and feel good about it, you become creative. Art is good, and it is a gift, said Dulce, who has been dubbed as Asias Timeless Diva.

Pilapil also commended the LGU s initiative of dedicating one month to local arts and culture.

Artistry is the soul of the city, she said. Without artists painters, singers, actors, dancers, and musicians the city would have no soul.
