MEXICO CITY — Mexican authorities say they have detained the father-in-law of alleged drug lord Joaquin Guzman, who is Mexico's most wanted man.
An official with the Attorney General's Office says federal officers detained Ines Coronel Barreras in northern Mexico. The official says authorities will have more details on Coronel's arrest later. The official was not authorized to be quoted by name.
Coronel is the father of Guzman's third wife.
The U.S. Treasury Department levied financial sanctions against Coronel in January. It said Coronel "plays a key role" in the Sinaloa drug cartel led by Guzman, also known as "El Chapo."
Coronel's listing under the U.S. Kingpin Act bars U.S. citizens from having business transactions with him and allows authorities to freeze any assets he has in the United States.
