- Cris Cayanan & Verns Joven -

MANILA, Philippines – Although in general, the year of the Metal Rabbit will bring luck to all signs this year, many Chinese and Filipino-Chinese still follow certain traditions to make the first day of the new year more auspicious.

For instance, tradition that even Filipinos follow is the kind of food served during New Year. The all-year-round favorite tikoy and hopia’s sticky characteristic is believed to seal and strengthen the bond in relationships, while its circular and infinity shape is said to bring luck.

To start the year right, giving thanks to all the blessings received for the whole year is a must, as well as asking guidance for the year ahead and offering one’s aspirations to God. This practice is commonly seen not just inside churches or temples but even in small altar corners in Binondo, despite the bustling activities and festivities.

Aside from these, amulets and charms likewise abound every streets in Chinatown, filling stalls with rabbit symbols and figurines in different forms. This according to merchants and buyers brings luck not only to the owners but to whatever business they are into.

Completing the whole celebration are firecrackers and various dragon dance to drive away negative vibes and attract positive energies. This year, the longest dragon dance was paraded in the streets of Binondo, wherein around hundred students participated as they circle the Plaza San Lorenzo Ruiz in front of Binondo Church and went inside the streets of Reina Regente, Ongpin and Quintin Paredes. And like the hopping and energetic characteristic of the rabbit, the merry celebration is expected to bring big leaps of blessings and luck for everyone.
