MANILA, Philippines -- In the tradition of celebrating the holiday season with a cause, this year's UP Lantern Parade featured environmental floats following its theme "Kapaskuhan, Kalikasan, Kinabukasan." The annual parade began in 1922 with different colleges participating and going around the 2.2-kilometer academic oval inside the Diliman campus.
What makes it different from other local festivities is the theme that invokes social relevant issues reflected on every float, which began in 1960s when the parade became an alternative venue for protests.
