CEBU, Philippines - Pope Francis has chosen a new pastor to lead the Diocese of Tagbilaran in Bohol.

The Vatican has announced that Reverend Father Alberto Uy of the Diocese of Talibon will be the new bishop of the Tagbilaran Diocese. This, after the Pope accepted the resignation of incumbent bishop, 77-year-old Leonardo Medroso.

The Catholic Church’s Code of Canon Law dictates that a diocesan bishop must submit their resignation to the pope upon reaching the age of 75.

Uy, a native of Bohol, is a priest from the Diocese of Talibon and serves as the vicar for clergy and pastor of the St. Michael the Archangel Parish.

He completed his philosophical studies at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Tagbilaran City and his theological studies, first at the St. John Mary Vianney Theological Seminary in Cagayan de Oro City—obtaining a baccalaureate in Sacred Theology and a Masters in pastoral Ministry—and then to the Loyola School of Theology in Quezon City, earning a licentiate in Sacred Theology.

For four years, Uy studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome where he attended courses for a doctorate in Sacred Theology.

He was ordained into the priesthood on April 14, 1993 for the Diocese of Talibon. (FREEMAN)
