Peace Month opens: Degamo calls for unity

DUMAGUETE CITY, Philippines  — Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo has called on his political opponents and other civil officials to set aside politics and work together for the good of the province in order to achieve peace in all aspects.

Degamo issued this statement as the provincial government led the opening salvo of the National Peace Consciousness Month observance this September during the flag-raising ceremony Monday at the Ninoy Aquino Freedom Park fronting the Capitol building in this city.

The activity, attended by provincial and national officials, department heads and employees, the police, the military and civil society organizations, also highlighted the signing of commitment on the “peace wall” and the releasing of white balloons.

Degamo, emphasizing the importance of unity among leaders, said he was extending peace to his political opponents to focus on delivering service to the people and stop mudslinging and dirty political maneuverings during the election period.

The governor also cited the declaration of Negros Oriental as conflict manageable and development ready province in relation to insurgency. “The province is generally peaceful; tourists have put their trust in us and now we are Top 2 tourist destination in the region,” he said.

Colonel Allan Martin, commander of the 302nd Infantry Brigade, for his part said every day should be observed as a day of peace, and that everyone must collaborate to attain peace. (FREEMAN)
