Martial Law victims urged to file compensation claims

Marchel P. Espina - The Freeman

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — Victims of the human rights abuses under the regime of former president Ferdinand Marcos should file their compensation claims at the Goverment Center in this city.

Human Rights Victims Claims Board chairperson Lina Sarmiento said the victims should file for reparations, the application period of which runs this month until November 10 this year.

Sarmiento said Martial Law victims must personally file their claim with the board while those who were killed, died or incapacitated, their legal heir or authorized representative may file it for them.

There are 20,000 to 30,000 claimants in the country who will received portions of the P10 billion reparation fund, she said, adding that about 500 victims are in Negros Occidental.

Sarmiento also warned against submitting fraudulent claims. "This law was enacted to honor the victims of Martial Law," and false claimants will face eight to 10 years imprisonment.  (FREEMAN)
