CEBU, Philippines - Six people sustained injuries when they fell into a sinkhole that suddenly appeared in the middle of a basketball court at Purok Jalandoni in Barangay Oringao of Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.
The sinkhole was reportedly 12-foot deep and three meters in diameter, but has a wide base underneath.
Kabankalan Mayor Isidro Zayco said the six residents, who were strolling in the area, fell into the sinkhole. They were unconscious when rescued not only because of the impact of the fall but also because of the gaseous odor below. The victims were rushed to a hospital but no one suffered any serious injuries.
Regional Director Leo Van Juguan of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau-Region 6 said the water flowing underground may have cause the sinkhole, which is considered as geological hazard. (FREEMAN)
