Guimaras province undertakes windmill power project
ILOILO CITY , Philippines — Besides aiming for more tourists, the island-province of Guimaras is hoping to attract more tourism investors and additional power capacity once its 27 windmill energy units will be operational next year.
Governor Samuel Gumarin said the 27 windmill units, some of which had began construction, could make Guimaras another tourist destination, in addition to its white sand beaches and sweet mango products.
The windmill units, each measuring 80 meters high and 40 meters wide, are being constructed in six out of 12 villages of San Lorenzo town: M. Chavez, Suclaran, Cabano, Igcawayan, Cabungahan and Gaban.
Gumarin said the windmills, each of which can produce 2 megaWatts of power or a total of 54 mW, will also stabilize the power supply in Guimaras that is currently using 13 mW daily from its supplier, Trans-Asia Power Generation Corp.
The governor said any excess power from the windmill will be exported to the nearby Panay Island via a submarine cable. (FREEMAN)
