ILOILO CITY, Philippines – A total of 3, 100 inmates from 35 jails in Western Visayas have registered to vote in the Oct. 28 barangay elections.
Jail Inspector Jimmy Britanico of BJMP-6, assistant warden of the Iloilo Provincial Integrated Jail based in Pototan, Iloilo said at least 400 inmates from this jail will cast their votes inside the jail where the Comelec had set up an on-site precinct.
Britanico said the IPIJ has 50 jail guards who will help secure the area during the actual political exercises.
In 2010, the Comelec had allowed inmates under the BJMP-6 controlled jails to cast their votes during election for as long as they were properly escorted by jail guards.
The BJMP-6 has a total of 634 jail officers around the region, which is enough number to escort voting inmates, added BJMP-6 chief investigator Leo Lacerna. —(FREEMAN)
