Re-electionists mustn’tuse gov’t resources

ILOILO CITY, Philippines   â€” The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) 6 has warned incumbent barangay officials who will run in next month’s election against using government resources for their campaign.

DILG-6 Director Evelyn Trompeta emphasized that government resources may be in forms of vehicles, office supplies, personnel and office hours.

“Using these government resources is prohibited. We don’t want our incumbent barangays officials to be abusive on their posts,” Trompeta said.

One way to keep track of officials transactions, Trompeta said, is for barangay officials to secure a “trip ticket” wherever they go.

“Trip ticket authorizes the travel and this is to determine their purpose in using the government vehicle,” she added.

Aside from the vehicles, Trompeta also advised the officials to refrain from using office supplies for their campaign materials.

Those who will be caught using government resources may be charged criminally and administratively, Trompeta said, adding, that the public can report abuses to DILG.  The office, she said, can look into complaints as long as a complaint is supported by evidence.

Trompeta said DILG will be under the control of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) during the election period and the agency is deputized to monitor movements in the barangay level.

The barangay election is slated on October 28, 2013.  (FREEMAN)
