BACOLOD CITY, Philippines -- The number of Sangguniang Kabataan voters in Negros Occidental for the SK Elections in October has ballooned to 50.6 percent, Provincial Comelec records show.
From 66,472 registered voters in the October 2010 elections, the number of SK voters now went up to 100,166, or an increase of 33,694 voters.
Even provincial elections supervisor Jessie Suarez was surprised at the unusually high turnout of SK voters.
Suarez said the Comelec expects only between 10 to 15-percent increase in the registration of voters, both SK and regular voters. "For whatever motivation, the result (for SK voters registration) is overwhelming," he said Wednesday.
In the regular voters for the Barangay Elections, the percentage of increase is only 3.82 percent, Suarez said.
The registered regular voters for the October 2013 elections is 1,635,676 or an increase of 60,245 from the previous 1,574,784 voters in the May 2013 elections. (FREEMAN)
