BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — A 21-year-old resident of this city was killed while two others were injured when a grenade exploded in Brgy. Banago in this city on New Year’s Eve, that was believed thrown at their residence.
The victim was identified as Bonifacio Tiangha, who died Wednesday afternoon, while his injured relatives were Rene Remegio and Jongjong Betua.
City Police director Sr. Supt. Ricardo de la Paz said it was initially reported that the incident was a pillbox explosion but the police later found out the suspects actually lobbed a grenade.
“Our follow-up investigation confirmed that it was a grenade that exploded. We recovered the safety lever of the grenade. There are also two suspects,” he said.
De la Paz identified the suspects as Ramy Poja, who allegedly threw the grenade, and Rogelio Acebedo Jr., who was allegedly seen carrying a submachine gun.
“They hold a grudge against the victims,” the police chief said of the suspects’ motive.
De la Paz said they are preparing murder and two counts of frustrated murder charges against the two suspects, who remained at-large, although the police was negotiating with their families for their surrender.
