EDITORIAL - Day 1
Today, Donald Trump is set be inaugurated as the 47th president of the United States.
It’s his second term, but not his second consecutive term, because he served as the 45th president before losing his reelection bid to Joe Biden, who became 46th president in 2019.
It is a return that has many people hopeful but also many apprehensive.
Trump has promised to hit the ground running and vowed to immediately make changes that will better the lives of Americans. In particular, it would seem he already has orders in place regarding immigration crackdowns and these are seen to take place immediately after he takes office.
Now the US waits with bated breath what his first day as returning president will be and what kind of president he will turn out to be.
Those who are apprehensive have their reasons for being so. During his first term Trump was very divisive when it came to demographics. As we keep pointing, out he liked to draw lines between different groups of Americans; the whites and the blacks, the Asians and the Hispanics, the rich and the poor, etc. He liked to set them off against each other, and everyone against immigrants in general, whether they were legal or not.
The rest of the world is also waiting to see what kind of world leader and power broker he will eventually turn out to be, because during his first time he wasn’t very active in the world stage, not fully appreciating the role of the US in international affairs and how it could influence global geopolitics.
But then again, the Biden administration must have bungled things up so bad that people actually clamored to have Trump back in the White House.
Because the citizenry has given him a fresh mandate, he deserves a second chance. Let’s just hope he learned from the mistakes of his first term, mistakes that cost him an immediate second term and put him on the backburner for four years.
Because while it could indeed be that he will make America great again, it could also be that he will make America regret again.
