Year end

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Perez - The Freeman

How timely that this column is out on the last day of 2024. Tomorrow, when we all wake up from the festivities, it will be another year. As this year comes to a close, it’s hard to ignore how much has transpired in Cebu over the past year. It is apt to remember the lessons brought by natural disasters to political and social controversies. Indeed, it’s been a year marked by both turbulence and transformation.

2024 was not spared from the onslaught of natural disasters. We faced a number of calamities that left residents scrambling for safety and recovery. This included fires and torrential rains that caused severe flooding and landslides in many areas. It was a stark reminder of the pressing need for better disaster preparedness and sustainable urban planning to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Beyond natural disasters, we were also embroiled in political and social controversies. One of the most contentious issues involved the presence of a Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO) operation in Lapu-Lapu City which was included in the national debate of the issue. It raised the eyebrows of local officials seemingly unaware of its existence in Cebu. On a large scale, it has affected our Philippine sovereignty, national security, and had potential for fostering criminal activity. The issue also raised broader questions about protecting the Philippines' national interests, including our already-sour relationship with China.

The year also saw heated public discourse surrounding the issue of misgendering. Jude Bacalso, a public figure, found himself at the center of a controversy when he was accused of being misgendered. This incident highlighted the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ+ rights and respect in the Philippines, as many activists and members of the community called for education on gender sensitivity. It was a reminder that despite progress, there’s still much work to be done in creating an inclusive society.

On the political front, the year was marked by the suspension and dismissal of two high-profile mayors, Mayor Michael Rama of Cebu City and Mayor Jonas Cortes of Mandaue. The suspensions were the result of allegations surrounding their leadership, adding a layer of uncertainty to the political landscape in Cebu. These cases are being attributed to their nemeses and are all being raised to higher courts. It got the ball rolling for calling on accountability, good governance, and the stability of local politics.

Meanwhile, in the world of entertainment, 2024 witnessed the breakup of several high-profile celebrity couples. While celebrity relationships are often scrutinized by the public, these breakups seemed to strike a particularly deep resonance with Filipinos in general, who were left grappling with the reality that even the most glamorous relationships can fall apart.

As we look toward 2025, we are bracing for both challenges and opportunities. The coming year offers a chance to rebuild, address lingering issues, and work towards a more inclusive society. Let’s hope that with the lessons learned in 2024, we can all move forward with a renewed sense of resilience, unity, and progress.
