EDITORIAL - America has spoken

The Freeman

The question many have wanted answered as to whether Americans wanted their first woman president or to return to a previous one was finally answered last Tuesday; the Americans preferred Donald Trump over Kamala Harris.

There is no arguing the 73,407,735 million votes Trump got over Harris’ 69,074,175, and the 295 electoral college votes he won over her 226. We will leave it to the pundits how his victory came about.

Certainly, the result was not the one many expected or hoped for. But that is how democracy works in the US or any other country for that matter; the voice of majority must be obeyed.

There are always pros and cons to every decision, especially when it comes to choosing a president during such a consequential election in US history when it is facing many issues both local and abroad.

On one hand, we see Trump making changes in US immigration policy, changes the previous administration was blamed for not taking and leading to the immigrant crisis they are facing now. On the other hand, we see a rise in hate crimes owing to his demonizing of immigrants, even those who have settled there to become responsible Americans.

On one hand, we see the US economy improving under Trump as he was credited with actually doing that during his previous term. On the other hand we see him again favoring the ultra-rich with his policies.

On one hand, we see Trump putting his hard-line negotiation skills to good use with other world leaders, especially those in countries at war. On the other hand, we have seen from his previous administration that he is really not interested in involving himself in world stage events.

Regardless of what anyone has said about Trump in the past, America has spoken and the US electoral system has been followed.

But as to whether or not Americans elected the candidate they need at this time remains to be seen.

KAMALA HARRIS
