USCIS update on Greencard validity

US IMMIGRATION NOTES - The Freeman

As of September 10, 2024, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has increased the validity period of Permanent Resident Cards, commonly referred to as Green Cards, to 36 months for lawful permanent residents submitting Form I-90, the Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card.

Lawful permanent residents who correctly file Form I-90 for the renewal of an expiring or expired Green Card are eligible for this extension. Previously, Form I-90 receipt notices granted a 24-month extension of a Green Card's validity. However, as of September 26, 2024, the extension period has been increased to 36 months.

USCIS has revised the wording on Form I-90 receipt notices, extending the validity of a Green Card to 36 months beyond the expiration date shown on the current Green Card for those who have recently filed a Form I-90 renewal. Starting September 10, USCIS initiated the issuance of updated receipt notices for applicants with a pending Form I-90.

Receipt notices can be used alongside an expired Green Card to demonstrate ongoing status and work authorization. This extension aims to assist applicants facing extended processing times by providing them with evidence of their lawful permanent resident status while they wait for their Green Card renewal.

Should you lose your Green Card and require proof of your lawful permanent resident status while awaiting a replacement, you can arrange an appointment with a USCIS Field Office by reaching out to the USCIS Contact Center. Following the filing of Form I-90, you may be issued an Alien Documentation, Identification, and Telecommunications (ADIT) stamp.
