EDITORIAL — Skywalk redesign a better option

The Freeman
EDITORIAL Skywalk redesign a better option

It would seem that the ongoing construction of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Cebu City would mean more than just renovating parts of some major highways; it also entails destroying two skywalks over Osmeña Boulevard.

However, the Department of Public Works and Highways has voiced their dissent, suggesting instead to somehow make those skywalks part of BRT design.

Let’s be honest here, many of us are too impatient to use those skywalks or pedestrian walkways in general. True to our “expeditious” nature we would rather find a place where we can cross the street, even at apparent danger to our lives. Many see them as a waste of money so tearing those skywalks down to make way for the BRT may seem like the better idea.

However, what the DPWH is suggesting is also a good idea. If somehow those two skywalks can be incorporated into the design of the BRT, then indeed why not?

They can even serve as access points to the BRT system so people have another option aside from crossing the road. They also happen to be situated near many points of interest along Osmeña Boulevard like schools, commercial buildings, and offices so they are strategically located.

Tearing those skywalks down will entail even more expense, we do not even have to mention the time it will take to tear them down and the traffic this will cause. On the other hand, turning them into access points to the BRT will certainly lead to their use again.

Of course, we are not architects and we don’t know if those skywalks are strong enough to carry the foot traffic of commuting people or specifically how they can fit into the BRT design. However, if the DPWH says it is possible then we must look for a way.

If there is a way to incorporate those skywalks into the design of the BRT then this avenue should be explored or, shall we way, this skywalk should be taken.
