Running for office
The Commission on Elections officially closed their offices to accept certificates of candidacy for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections. This means that they will now move on to the next step which is to validate the aspirants and release the official list of candidates. It was a fun-filled week; one that was filled with fanfare such as music, balloons, tarpaulins and more. I'd still love to say the old tourism slogan: It is indeed more fun in the Philippines.
Comelec said that their role is primarily ministerial in accepting the documents for those who aspire to serve in our villages. However, they also play an important role in validating the documents that reach their offices. It will be a tedious process moving forward and the candidates will also do their job to circumvent the election law.
You see, there are no prohibitions as to public exposure and posting of candidates. The only caveat is the absence of explicit campaigning. For the Commission, this type of campaigning is classified as writing the word "vote" or "iboto" on any material. We have great laws that govern our electoral system but still it is very flawed and sketchy.
While they are only doing their best to promote themselves, constituents should also look beyond what they can offer during the election period. I came across a social media post that called for a debate between candidates both from the regular ones and those running for the SK. A debate is a measure of intelligence and a good avenue to hold onto promises which they are bound to fulfill.
There are basic qualifications that we should ask from the candidates and one of them is the ability to write. The job of the barangay officials is not just to oversee the welfare of the village but to also legislate laws within their jurisdiction. This means writing resolutions, reports, and other letters for their council and the people. If we are stuck with barangay officials who cannot even do this, then we will be doomed at this level.
Many are calling for a new wind this election season. It is quite vague what that means but I'd like to think that these are sets of leaders who are younger and have better plans than those who have been in the position for years. If we still apply the principle of "choose wisely" then we might get leaders that we actually need.
Running for office is not just a walk in the park. It is not about who has the most family members in office. To me, it is about giving up a part of yourself for the community. It will be about agreeing on matters that will tremendously help the community. The topics could range from the environment, labor, and many more. It will be an exciting roller-coaster ride. I pray for discernment as the day of the polls nears. We all need a little prayer or two.
