Qualifications

A French fries company recently drew flak for its hiring qualifications as they were looking for service crew members. Aside from age, they were looking for individuals who had “good visual impact and pleasing personality”. They also sought individuals who were blessed with a body composition that apparently had “weight proportionate to height”. To top it all, only those with clear complexion, good eyesight, and good set of teeth were to be accepted. It sent the wrong message to the society and it looked like the company wanted to seemingly set standards.

We live in a time when everything is about inclusivity. To be inclusive means to get rid of stereotypes and to give everybody a chance at what they wish for. In other countries, there are minimal qualifications set for those who want to get a job in the food and beverage industry. During our visit to Singapore, we were amazed at senior citizens who were busy at the food courts. They either sold food or cleaned tables. Their charm was different. Our friends told us that even as they age, they do not want their family members to feel like they are dependent on them.

While the company under scrutiny has already issued an apology, it makes us reflect on what business landscape we currently have. There are a lot of criticisms about the current senior high school curriculum, which is not often enough for some employers. The goal was to make students fit for work even if they do not have their college degree yet. However, even the most basic jobs want their workers to be at least college level.

I wonder if either the Department of Education and the Department of Labor and Employment has looked into this issue. This is a very serious one which is degrading our workforce. If the nature of the job does not require high intellect, educational attainment is not an issue. Sometimes, skills are more required. There must be something wrong with how potential employers view individuals who are just up to the senior high school level. If they found a flaw in what has been taught, they should speak up so that necessary changes could be implemented.

As the school year for public schools starts next week, I am a bit fearful of the effects that it will have on the community. There are still several issues that need to be addressed such as shortage of classrooms and teachers, accessibility to reach the schools and the like. The vice president, also the Education secretary, will visit Cebu to check on what can be improved. I hope that these will be some of the problems that she will look into. This is not only perennial in Cebu but also in the whole country.

The company may be spared for now from the backlash but may it serve as a reminder for all other companies. Qualifications do not translate to work attitude.
