Ronald R. Duterte, doctor of laws and Cebu City mayor

Ronald was born on January 15, 1934. He studied law at the University of Southern Philippines and was admitted to the Bar on March 2, 1956. His father, Ramon, was also a lawyer (admitted to the Bar on December 31, 1925). Vicente, the younger brother of his father also became a lawyer on February 27, 1940, and a first cousin (the son of Vicente) by the name of Rodrigo “Digong” was admitted to the Bar on June 20, 1973.

After passing the Philippine Bar, Ronald went to earn a Master’s Degree in Comparative Law at Columbia and Doctor of Laws at the Unibersidad de Madrid in 1960.

Ronald entered politics as councilor in the slate of Mayor Sergio “Serging” Chiong Veloso Osmeña Jr. in the November 12, 1963. Their entire team won against Atty. Ramon Durano and Dr. Osmundo Rama.

Ronald was reelected as councilor in the November 14, 1967 election of Serging Osmeña against the slate of then former governor Francisco Remotigue and Mayor Carlos Cuizon. Ronald placed first in the November 8, 1971 local election. This time his political mentor, Serging Osmeña, ran against Atty. Mario Ortiz.

Ronald was elected vice mayor. He was Cebu City’s fourth elected vice mayor (in 1937, in the original charter, the mayor and vice mayor were appointed by the president) on January 30, 1980. In 1983, he succeeded Dr. Florentino Solon as Cebu City mayor when the latter was appointed by President Marcos as director of the Nutrition Center of the Philippines.

Ronald was the son of Ramon Duterte and Rosario Regis. Ronald married Gloria Parinas, a beauty queen, and had the following children: Kathleen Genevieve, Christian Alison, and Ronald II. The siblings of Mayor Ronald were Jesus (who married Jean Villaluz), Myrna (who married Mark Grieder), Cherrie (who married Hans Gross), and Ramon Jr. (who married Alice Quilicot).

After his retirement from politics, Ronald became president of the University of the Southern Philippines and dean of its College of Law.

The siblings of Ramon (his father) were Jorge (who married Estefania Cortes), Mariano (who married Salud Calvo), Soledad (who married Epifanio Rodis), and Vicente (who married Soledad Roa).
