Estanislao Labucay Street, Cebu City
The Cebu City Council on December 23, 1965 enacted City Ordinance No. 559 naming streets within the Gochan Subdivision in Marangay Mabolo, Cebu City. Among them is a street in honor of Estanislao Labucay, it is the street running parallel to Manuel Borgonia Street beyond Tres Borces Padres Street up to Felix Gochan Street.
The ordinance was approved on January 4, 1966 by lawyer Carlos “Carling” Cuizon, then the Cebu City mayor. The street is 0.160 kilometers in length with 10 meters road right of way and a proposed sidewalk of 1.20 meters.
Estanislao Labucay was a prominent businessman in Cebu during his lifetime. A historical fixture along Magallanes Street and Calderon Street fronting the Colegio de San Jose-Recoletos (now called USJ-R) is a building built in 1948 with his name on the top front. It was where the first branch of the Lhuillier chain of pawnshops was opened and up to now a branch is still there.
Estanislao Labucay married Anacleta Barba and the couple had four children; Vicenta, Leoncio, Esperanza, and Anunciacion.
Vicenta married Sotero Cabahug, a lawyer who later became governor of Cebu. Esperanza married Fructuoso Cabahug, the brother of Sotero who also was a lawyer and who later also became governor of Cebu (the Cabahug brothers hold the distinction of being Cebu’s only sibling governors of Cebu), Anunciacion married an Alejandre.
Leoncio, the only boy of the Labucay couple, became a lawyer on November 10, 1934. He married Vicenta del Rosario, the daughter of Alejandro Ouano del Rosario who served Mandawe (Mandaue City) as municipal president for 18 years, and Genoveva Sanchez Mendoza. Among their children is Doña Angelina Labucay Escano.
Leoncio Labucay married twice, a daughter by the name of Josephine married Emmanuel “Manny” Rabacal, Cebu’s media icon who for decades was the manager of Bombo Radyo Cebu, he also served as member of the Regional Development Council and presently hosts “Hello Cebu, Maayong Buntag Pinoy”, a morning show of Cebu’s Catholic Television Network with Nonito “Tatay Dodong” Limchua as chief executive officer. Manny and Josephine were married in 1966 and had as their sponsors Mayor Carlos Cuizon and Candelario Almendras, an executive of the then Osmeña Waterworks System now known as the Metro Cebu Waterworks District.
