EDITORIAL – Jeepney modernizationlong overdue
At least 15 modern public utility jeepneys will soon begin running along the streets of Metro Manila. The new units were launched yesterday after the operators complied with all the requirements from the government.
This development has been part of the government’s effort to modernize the jeepney sector. Under the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program, jeepney operators nationwide are required to step up and upgrade their units.
In Cebu, there is a route being pushed months ago to be used for modern jeepneys. The Cebu Integrated Transport Service Multi-Purpose Cooperative (Citrasco) bought at least five units of “modern jeepneys” as part of the effort to comply with the government’s modernization program for PUV.
These air-conditioned units, each reportedly costs P1.6 million and can carry at least 23 passengers, will have free wi-fi and are equipped with dash cams, global positioning system, and closed-circuit television cameras.
However, Citrasco is still waiting for the green light from the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board on its petition. The group hopes that the LTFRB will grant provisional authority for the new route, which is from Cebu City Hall to Cebu I.T. Park to Robinsons Galleria and to Cebu Business Park.
With the modern jeepneys soon to start operating in Manila and Cebu, many are hoping that the government will tap all available resources for the immediate nationwide implementation of the program.
For decades, some quarters have been calling on the government to act on the need to modernize the country’s public utility jeepneys. In fact, since majority of PUJs are more than 10 years old, there are calls for their total phaseout as such form of mass transportation has become outmoded.
It’s unfortunate, however, that the program’s implementation remains slow because of strong resistance from thousands who are bound to be affected. But since the program has long been overdue, authorities need to begin demonstrating strong political will for its immediate implementation.
