HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   - The Freeman

A rising young movie star was asked who her best bet among the presidential hopefuls. Her answer came quick: "Tatakbo ba uli si Noynoy?"

There was laughter in the audience. And she asked: "Bakit tawa sila nang tawa?" Commented one watcher of the show: "Showbiz people should read mainstream newspapers, not the showbiz tabloids that feature them and their lovelife."

I have come across many write-ups paying tribute to schoolteachers but this advertorial from Gabay Guro I consider the most inspiring. It says:

A teacher's Promise

I will teach them to write, teach them to read. I will teach them to dream and to succeed. I will show them worlds they've not seen before. I will show them heights from whence they could soar.

I need no accolades, I need no acclaim. I need no trophies or spotlights of fame. Give me strength of spirit and a willing ear. Come what may, I have nothing to fear. And though difficult to be the task at hand, proudly I teach because, I am.

I was listening to Rev. Fr. Fortich's homily last Wednesday in the CCTN Chapel and I remembered what my media colleague the late Henry Redula often reminded me.

* * *

Henry would always advise me never to be absent in any gathering of media people.

Henry said, "If I didn't want to be made the subject of nasty talks (libak, he called it) I must be there.) "It's human nature among mediamen to talk about colleagues not present," he said.

* * *

That's also what Fr. Fortich said. "Kun dili ta gustong libakon sa mga higala, ayaw gyud pag-absent sa mga gathering," he said in jest.
