Crime in the family circle

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   - The Freeman

A native of Makati, now a resident of Cebu, says VP Jojo Binay deserves a plaque of appreciation for his gallant stand against the senators. Maybe yes. But some people are giving him not a plaque but a flak.

We're celebrating the International Women's Month. More and more women in Phl are gaining equal rights with men. It's no longer just the husband who wears the pants or trousers in the family.

The SWS says there were 4 million families who were victims of crimes. Would you believe that some of these crimes were committed by family members themselves? We have read in the papers about a son killing his father, father raping his own daughter, husband gunning down his wife, brother killing his own brother, etc.

That was some accolade Bob Arum bestowed upon the Philippines and the Filipino people during the Mayweather -Pacquiao presscon at the MGM Grand hotel in Las Vegas early Thursday a.m.

* * *

The presscon was intended to build up the Pacquiao-Mayweather megafight card May 2. But most of what Bob Arum talked about was in praise of Filipinos, including the US-Phl partnership in war and in peace. You must have seen that presscon (early Thursday a.m., our time) and heard what Bob Arum said about us Pinoys. So no need for me to elaborate further.

Speaking of boxing, I was watching a boxing bout on tv and enjoyed the annotation by a sportscaster until I heard him ask another boxing annotator after the latter said one of the boxers came from Bacolod City. The boxing annotator asked: "Where is Bacolod, pare, in Negros Oriental, di ba?"

Someone seated near me as we watched the boxing match on tv remarked: "That sportscaster must have flunked in his Geography subject in school. Imagine not knowing where Bacolod is? Bacolod City is one of the oldest and most prominent cities in Phl.

One text message I got early this morning -- may I share it with you? -- said: "There is no greater happiness than freedom from worry or fear, and there is no greater wealth than being content with life. Pray not to ask God for what you need but to thank Him for what you have. Laging maganda ang umaga."

Thanks to whoever sent me that nice quote. But I have to pray to God for good health. Didn't God say, "Ask and you shall receive." I have been asking and have been receiving. To God be the glory.

When I ask God for something I need, I do so confident that He will give. God, you see, is not a politician who doesn't fulfill his promise. As Pope Francis assured the Yolanda victims in Tacloban: "God will not let you down."
