Food for the soul
I do not agree with some when they say that the most important thing in life is to live. That sounds just too cliché, especially with the infamous teenage slogan today that says YOLO or "you only live your life once." Given that life is lived once, others take it to the extreme by doing what they want to do as if there is no tomorrow.
I have seen countless teen parties till the sun rises or splurge all their wealth until their money runs out. Hey, I know you have your freedom but there is a future to think about. Add to that the next generation that is looking at you.
But what is death, have we ever thought about it? Even the slightest bit of it gives me the cringes. I do not like the sight of coffins nor tombstones. It makes me want to run and plead to have my life a bit longer. But actually, I have come to realize that the important thing in life is to die with an impact. By then you have lived a life worth remembering to all.
Yet what is impact? Is it a thing or two done in order to gain fame or popularity or impression to those who surround you? As far as I could understand, giving impact means you have inspired others to dream big by believing in every inch of them. It may sound so melodramatic and too motherhood but you and me could inspire a soul to two.
Being a helping hand already has a rippling effect and gives a good feel on a brother or sister. Also, by showing a smile to anyone you encounter changes the mood for the day. Later on, you are seen helping others to be at their best by being the coach, life adviser, and supporter in every small step in reaching their dreams.
Back in college, I had a hard time juggling all that I was doing with my life - academics and part time jobs, add to that the extra doings of organizations. Despite all that, I always made it a point to show those around me that there is a positive vibe within me that they should emulate. It was always my goal to make someone look at life in a better perspective than the way they did before. I am not really sure how that all worked out but I know I did my part in changing the world's mindset from negative to positive.
Also, I am not confident that I have given impact but at least I am at peace knowing that I have done the job well. The question of death quivers me but nobody knows what will happen sooner or later. What about you, have you thought about what you have done with your peers lately? Think about the slightest bit of happy aura that you have given off to the people you work with. Is there any? If none, are you planning to do so?
Given a week to prepare for the scariest (horror stories and horror movies on loop) days of the year, I brace for the worse in this borrowed life. I ponder on the most difficult challenges that I have overcome and thank the Creator for giving me strength to go through such. It is not about the zombies and the ghouls that haunt your sleep at night or your visit to the tombs.
As All Souls Day approaches, let it not be just a day for remembering our departed loved ones but also a day of reflection on our own life. Have we asked ourselves, what are we doing here? And who I am living for? If you have found the answers to these questions then you are sure to be bound to have a life of purpose.
