Cordova, Cebu, 1967 elections
During the local elections of Cordova, Cebu held on November 14, 1967 it was a battle between a political veteran and a green horn. The incumbent mayor, lawyer Sergio A. Baguio, sought for a reelection. He was challenged by Celedonio B. Sitoy, a twenty-eight-year-old young doctor of medicine.
Mayor Baguio, who was elected mayor of Cordova in 1960, was elected twice. His third term started when he won in the 1967 elections. Baguio, a lawyer, was admitted to the Bar on March 28, 1949. Prior to his election as mayor of Cordova, he was an employee of the Cebu City Post Office.
Doctor Celedonio B. Sitoy, though a fresh graduate, had the support of his brother, lawyer Adelino B. Sitoy, who was an assistant city fiscal. Adelino who was admitted to the Bar on January 26, 1961 would have a role in Cordova's politics years later.
In the elections in 1967, Doctor Celedonio lost to Incumbent Mayor Baguio. Mayor Sergio A. Baguio would then serve as the town's chief executive until 1974 or a total of 14 years.
Doctor Celedonio, eight years after he lost the election for mayor, would then become the mayor of Cordova in 1975. Doctor Sitoy was mayor until 1986, interrupted by the appointments of president Corazon Cojuangco Aquino of OIC (Officer in Charge) mayors. doctor Sitoy was replaced by Deogracias Jumao-as, who served as Cebu City Market Superintendent. Doctor Sitoy would then retake his position in the general elections held in 1988. Dr. Sitoy then continued to serve the people of Cordova up to 1997.
Doctor Sitoy bowed out from politics but another member of the Sitoy clan would continue taking the leadership of the town. An ascendant, Juan Sitoy, was mayor of Cordova from 1945 to 1947. Doctor Sitoy was succeeded by Arleigh Jay C. Sitoy, a nephew, son of his brother lawyer Adelino B. Sitoy, who became Dean of the University of Cebu's College of Law. Lawyer Sitoy also served as president of the Lubas sa Dagang Bisaya (LUDABI) and was elected assemblyman during the regular Batasang Pambansa which had its opening session on July 23, 1984.
The co-assemblymen of lawyer Sitoy were Regalado E. Maambong, Emerito S. Calderon, Ramon D. Durano III, Luisito R. Patalinghug all of the ruling Kilusang Bagong Lipunan or KBL. The sixth assemblyman representing the Province of Cebu was the revered radio personality, Nenita "Inday Nita" Cortes Daluz. She belonged to UNIDO. Cebu City's assemblymen were Antonio V. Cuenco and Marcelo B. Fernan, both belonged to the UNIDO.
Mayor Arleigh Jay C. Sitoy led the town from 1998 to 2007. When he reached the three term limit in 2007 his father, lawyer Adelino B. Sitoy would then succeed him. Mayor Arleigh would then ran for board member representing the 6th district of Cebu of which Cordova is part.
In 1965 the following were the officials of Cordova who served under Mayor Sergio A. Baguio: Filemon Nunez, vice mayor, Crisostomo Pogoy, municipal secretary, Alejandro E. Mendoza was municipal judge, he was admitted to the Bar on March 28, 1949. Judge Mendoza was from Mandaue, Cebu. The municipal treasurer was Tadeo G. Encabo, Magdaleno Nunez was its Chief of Police and Dr. Dora Villaruz was its health officer.
The members of the town council were Adriano Ventura, Jovino Baguio, Abundio Tajanlangit, Jesus N. Oczon, Calixto Tago and Quirico A. Ando.
