Sabellano St., Cebu City

It is the street from the corners of I. Tabura and F. Llamas Streets (within the jurisdiction of Barangays Basak San Nicolas and Punta Princesa) in the then Pardo District in which it traverses the barangays of Quiot, Pardo, and Punta Princesa. The complete official name of the street is "Eutiquio Sabellano Street."

It is named in honor of a member of the Junta Municipal de Cebu or the Municipal Government of Cebu in 1917. The Municipal President at that time was Fructuoso Rodis Ramos, the 960-meter long street starting at the corner of Gen. Arcadio Molero Maxilom Avenue is named after him.

Sabellano, was one of the 15 members of the Junta Municipal de Cebu. Ramos was the president, the vice president was Damaso Leyson and the members were Andres Jayme (an aide of Gen. Arcadio Maxilom during the Cebuano revolt against Spain and the United States), Jose Ma. Borromeo, Quirino Rodriguez (a building in the corner of Colon St. and Osmeña Blvd. still stands and bears his name), Vicente Rama (who years later became father of the Cebu City Charter and the second Cebu City Mayor), Julio Diaz, Rufino Lauron, Francisco Labrador (City Ordinance No. 644 changed the name of the street called Bugallon St. to Francisco Ma. Labrador), Jose N. Solon (a street in Lahug is named after him), Andres R. Borres (a street in Suba is named after him, his son Eulogio became Cebu City Mayor), Pedro Casquejo, Jose Ma. Roa, Filemon del Mar, Isidro Enriquez, Jose P. Nolasco and Sabellano.

The secretary to the Municipal Board was Uldarico Alviola. The street formerly known as Villagonzalo II located in Barangay Tinago was renamed after Alviola.

The governor of Cebu at that time was Manuel Roa (from 1912 to 1922), the Municipality of Cebu was still under the jurisdiction of the Provincial Government and its ordinances still has to be reviewed by the Provincial Board.

It was Lawyer Jesus S. Gabuya (son of Councilor Lucas Gabuya, a street in Pardo is named after him), Councilor of Cebu City and also of Pardo District that sponsored the ordinance naming the street in honor of Eutiquio Sabellano. City Ordinance No. 646 was enacted by the City Council on November 18, 1968.

It was during the incumbency of Councilor Sabellano that the Pardo Public Market and the Pardo Elementary School were constructed through his vision, initiative and foresight. Aside from the buildings Councilor Sabellano facilitated the sitios and barrios of Pardo District artesian wells.

The members of the Cebu City Council that enacted the ordinance naming the street in honor of "Eutiquio Sabellano" were: Florencio S. Urot, Ronald R. Duterte, Bienvenido S. Tudtud, Arturo L. Abellana, Jesus S. Gabuya, Jose L. Rodriguez, Raymundo Crystal, Caridad A. Trocino and Jose V. Arias. The Council's Secretary was Atty. Leodegario C. Salazar with Engr. Euligio E. Borres as City Mayor.

The Secretary to the Mayor was Atty. George M. Baladjay (admitted to the Bar on March 18, 1965, originally from Giuhulngan, Negros Oriental). Atty. Baladjay became Cebu City Councilor, a famous trial lawyer of Cebu and candidate for Cebu City Mayor.
