Avelino Morales St., Cebu City
It is the street formerly known as "Lanzones" situated between Sampaguita (P. Rodriguez Street) and N. Escario Streets, in Barangay Kamputhaw, Cebu City.
It is named in honor of "Avelino Morales," who served as Member of the Municipal Board of Cebu for two terms. Morales was the founder and organizer of one of the first organized labor group in Cebu the "Katipunan Labor Union." The labor union founded by Morales was a major labor union in Cebu, labor conflicts involving the union and the management reached the Supreme Court. Among the cases was "Caltex (Cebu) versus Katipunan, decided by the Supreme Court on January 31, 1956. Another case was between the same union and company decided by the High Tribunal on April 25, 1962.
Morales was a prolific writer and a newspaperman, he wrote articles in the leading newspapers and magazines in Cebu. He became publisher of his own newspaper, "Ang Sulo."
Morales would then have a very special role in Cebu politics when the House of Representatives approved a resolution not to recognize the election of Don Vicente Rama as representative of the old 3rd Congressional District of Cebu, Cebuano legislators moved for a special election.
Rama came back to Cebu on board a ship named "Belgica" and arrived on December 24, 1923. Don Vicente Rama was accompanied by Don Vicente Sotto and Representative Nicolas Rafols. The special election was scheduled on February 9, 1924. Rama's party was Partido Democrata while his opponent was Nacionalista. The Nacionalista put up Vicente Urgello to be Rama's opponent in the special election.
Rafols and Sotto quickly established a Committee for Propaganda and Publicity to spread the candidacy of Rama and also to answer the attack against the party and its candidate. Avelino Morales was given the task to head a newssheet named "Dinamita" or in English, the Dynamite. Don Vicente Rama described Morales as a young public speaker and writer. Morales was assisted by Constancio Tenchavez as treasurer.
With the help of Morales "Dinamita," who repeatedly countered all the black propaganda hurled against Don Vicente Rama, won the special election. Rama won in all the precincts in Carcar (which was the hometown of Don Vicente Urgello), in San Fernando, Talisay, Naga and Minglanilla. Rama won with 485 majority votes earning him the position as representative of the old 3rd Congressional District of Cebu.
The Cebu City Council on July 15, 1974 enacted City Ordinance No. 888 renaming Lanzones Street to Avelino Morales Street. The street naming ordinance was sponsored by then city councilor Arturo L. Abellana.
The other members of the city council that enacted the ordinance were: Florencio S. Urot, who was its presiding officer, Raymundo A. Crsytal, who was its president protempore, Bienvenido B. Tudtud as floor leader. The members were: Pablo U. Abella, George M. Baladjay, Arturo R. Abellana, Jesus S. Gabuya, Mario R. Veloso and Jose V. Cuenco.
The ordinance was approved by Mayor Eulogio Enriquez Borres on August 14, 1974. The City Council's Secretary was lawyer Pompio A. Paradiang. It was Bienvenido M. Bacalso, the Administrative Deputy officer-in-charge who was acting secretary to the mayor.
