If there is anything this nation needs, it is to fix our political system as soon as possible. Yes what we have today is a Presidential system of governance, but instead of having a two-party system, what we have is a multi-party system, which is best suited for a Parliamentary system of government. This is why our democracy is called "Demo crazy!" First of all, what we need are political parties that offer an ideology that people would embrace.
But what we have today is nothing but personality politics. This has been happening in this country since we removed the conjugal Marcos Dictatorship! Filipinos tend to look up to our politicians like demi-gods and idolize them just like the way they idolize movie stars, hence now the movie stars have turned into politicians because of the money they can get from their political positions. This is not much different from the political cults that the Communists have created…like Mao Zedong in China, the cult of Stalin in Communist Russia, and in North Korea it's Kim il-Sung.
Take the case of the Liberal Party, because their "Manok" Department of Interior & Local Government (DILG Secretary Manuel "Mar" Roxas has lost all his credibility, the LP could not find anyone suitable or winnable as their Presidential candidate for the 2016 elections. So the LP decided to take on Vice-Pres. Jejomar Binay as "Guest" candidate simply because he is a loyal Aquino dog who would never cross the Aquino family.
Then last Aug.21st during the anniversary of the assassination of Ninoy Aquino, former Sen. Butz Aquino openly declared that the Aquino family is backing VP Binay. Why are they doing this? Because they all perceive VP Binay is a winnable candidate and they need him to protect the interest of Pres. Aquino lest he end up like his predecessor in jail! Yet from the looks of it… because of the scandalously priced Makati Building, even VP Binay might end up being impeached!
So where are the political principles of the LP that they would not even try looking for candidates from within their party? To tell you the truth, the LP leaders have no principles at all! Proof of this is what I just read in the papers the other day which blared that the LP is not going to have an official stand any time soon on whether or not it would support moves to amend the political provisions of the Constitution even as President Aquino continues to consult the people on proposals for a second term.
People tell me that PNoy already declared that he is no longer interested in having another term after the Lipa Declaration was made public and that New York Times editorial came out. But on the other hand, PNoy is the leader of the LP and therefore it goes without saying that this fellow has no principles at all. So just like PNoy, the LP has no stand on this highly unpopular issue where political parties ought to have a stand.
In Western nations, their political parties do make a stand on major issues whether they are for or against the measure. But the LP's having no stand only proves that their members have no backbone and no principles! What about the so-called opposition under the United Nationalist Alliance led by VP Binay? The truth here is that UNA is no opposition at all because of our ill-fated democracy! This is why there are no longer any checks and balances in this so-called democracy of the Philippines.
It is for this reason why I've been batting for a change in our political system because we're still stuck in personality politics from the time of the Marcos Dictatorship. Just imagine in the last 40 years, Philippine politics have been dominated by two names, the Marcoses and the Aquino's! Both families have become extremely rich, while the ordinary Filipino has become extremely poor! But does the LP care for the Filipino people?
Take the case of the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law, LP stalwarts are pushing for it in Congress; but they know too well that you cannot have this law passed and enacted by a Congress because that can only happen if there are amendments to the Philippine Constitution.
So let the unprincipled members of the LP push for the passage of the Bangsamoro Basic Law and if and when Pres. Aquino signs it into a law…it is almost a guarantee that someone will file a case before the Supreme Court for its unconstitutionality and just like what happened to the MO-AD during the time of then Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, the Supreme Court will shoot it down and then we're back to square one!
Meanwhile, what has happened to the infamous Janet Lim Napoles list of senators and congressmen who misused their pork barrels with fake NGO's so they can pocket the people's money? Since the incarceration of Senators Juan Ponce Enrile, Jinggoy Estrada, and Bong Revilla, the Office of the Ombudsman seems to have stopped there instead of indicting the rest.
