Maximino Lazarte Sr. St., Cebu City

It is the street formerly called as "Sudlon" within the jurisdiction of Barangay Parian. It is the street perpendicular to Colon before it ends at the junction of Mabini St.

Maximino Lazarte Sr. was the Teniente del Barrio of Barangay Parian in the 1960's up to his death on January 6, 1993. He literally died while serving his constituency, as he was typing a barangay clearance before he collapsed.

M. Lazarte Sr. was born on July 30, 1921 son of Eusebia Reynes Lazarte, who was the daughter of Carlota Reynes. His father was Segundo Espinosa, who did not marry his mother, but just like many great Cebuanos who were reared by single mothers, Maximino Sr. grew up to be the longest reigning brgy captain of the oldest district of Cebu (43 years, started serving the barangay in the 1950's).

Cebuano leaders who were raised by single mothers, among many, were Don Sergio Osmeña (son of Juana Suico Osmeña), Don Vicente Rama (son of Engelberta Rama), and Don Vicente Sotto (though his mother, Pascuala Yap married Marcelino Legaspi Sotto, the latter died when Vicente was only 14 years old).

Maximino Lazarte Sr. had two siblings, Felix Lazarte who married Adela and Paz who married Gregorio Cañete. Maximino Sr. married Ma. Salud Herediano of Naga, Cebu and they had the following children: Eduardo who married Estrella Liao, Reynaldo married Emma Duhaylungsod, Maximino Jr. his namesake married Jennifer Quiamco (a three termer barangay councilor of Brgy Parian), Evelyn married William Balaga, Mario Jerome married Lucita Acop, Ma. Lourdes married Vicente Filoteo, Cerino Howard married Mary Ann Sabarre, Manuel married Rebecca Pinunggan and the youngest, Felix Jose (served the city as in charge of the Cebu City Office on Substance Abuse Prevention or COSAP, then of the office of City Councilor Augustus "Jun" Pe) married Criselda Cabano.

The street renaming was in response to the call of the officials of Brgy. Parian when it passed to Brgy. Resolution No. 2014-3 dated July 4, 2014 to change Sudlon Street in honor of the late Maximino Lazarte Sr.

It was City Councilor James Anthony R. Cuenco who sponsored the ordinance, who was first referred to the Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission who passed Resolution No. 001-2013 verifying the accuracy of the historical significance of Maximino Lazarte Sr. to Barangay Parian and recommended the approval of the changing of the street name.

The Cebu City Council on March 26, 2014 approved City Ordinance No. 2390 changing the name of Sudlon St. to Maximino Lazarte Sr. St. The ordinance was approved by Mayor Michael Lopez Rama on April 10, 2014.
