Luis Abellar Street

The Luis Abellar Street is a portion of the street named Sto. Niño. It starts from the Don Bosco Training Center up to the boundary between barangays Pasil and Suba.

City Ordinance No. 1750, on the motion of Councilor Jocelyn G. Pesquera, on March 3, 1999, provided for the renaming of a portion of Sto. Niño Street into Luis Abellar Street.

Luis Abellar, with fellow KKK leaders Francisco Llamas (a street is also named after him) and Mariano Hernandez, freed the prisoners at the carcel (the building which formerly housed the Cebu Provincial Jail and is presently the Museo Sugbo) along M.J. Cuenco Avenue. They also released the lepers at Hospital de Lazarinas in Carreta from the Spanish soldiers.

Luis Abellar, with Tranquilino delos Santos, Nicomedes Machacon, Luciano Machacon and Precioso Padilla, were arrested and executed by the Spanish authorities during the height of the Cebuano revolt against Spain in April of 1898.

The City Ordinance renaming the street was signed by then mayor Alvin B. Garcia on March 16, 1999 yet up to now residents of Barangay Suba and Pasil still call the street Sto. Niño.

Luis Abellar is one of the few Cebuano patriots and KKK leaders whose name is honored with a street name.
