The street known as Andres Abellana Street, in Cebu City, is the street which stretches from M. Velez Street (Marcial Velez St.) up to Singson Road, including what was previously known as Andres Abellana Extension.
Andres was a former Capitan of the San Nicolas District of the old Cebu when he was recruited by Pantaleon Villegas, otherwise known as Leon Kilat. He, with his brothers, Fabian and Lucas were arrested after the Battle of Tres de Abril (April 3, 1898) by the Spaniards. He was tried in Carcar but was spared from execution because of the intervention of other well known Cebuanos.
Andres was the first few recruits of the KKK in Cebu. Among his comrades were Candido Padilla, Luis Flores and Francisco Llamas. They were the leaders of the uprising against the Spaniards.
He is the father of Hilario, fondly called Dodong, who became president of the old Municipality of Cebu, and then became Governor of Cebu. Though no street is named after the son of Andres, one of the biggest and oldest schools in Cebu City is named after him, the Abellana National School.
Ordinance No. 87, sponsored by then president of the City Council Florentino D. Tecson and approved by then City Mayor Miguel Raffinan on January 23, 1950, provided that Road Lot No. 13 of the Veloso Subdivision in Barangay Guadalupe be named in honor of Andres Abellana. The ordinance also renamed the subdivision road lots to Luciano Bacayo, Dr. Emilio Osmeña and Guerrileros streets.
Another ordinance, No. 1397, approved on December 29, 1988 by the City Council, signed on January 5, 1998 by the mayor, clarified the extent of the street.
