B. Aznar Street

The whole strip of a street starting from Osmeña Boulevard running southward, formerly known as Visitacion Street, is now called Anunciacion B. Aznar Street.

Ordinance No. 1149, approved on July 18, 1983 repealed City Ordinance No. 1103 (dated August 3, 1981) that renamed Tambis St. to Anunciacion B. Aznar Street. The reason of the repeal is that the city road is so insignificant and located in one of the remotest sections of the city and is therefore inappropriate to perpetuate the memory of one who contributed so much for the growth and development of the City of Cebu.

But who was Anunciacion B. Aznar?  Born in Carcar and a member of the Barcenilla clan, she was the wife of Don Matias H. Aznar, who founded the Southwestern University.

She devoted the best years of her life to the education of our youth and at the same time dedicated much of her time, efforts and money to uplift the living conditions of city residents, especially the poor and the needy.

She was a recipient of an award from the United States of America for volunteer services in Medical Education on August 11, 1965 and was also awarded by the YMA for Outstanding Service to Humanity on February 26, 1966.

She offered full scholarships to poor but deserving students through the Anunciacion B. Aznar Scholarship and organized and funded the MERCY TEAM, otherwise known as the “Medical Emergency Relief for Charity”.

She donated 10 hectares of land at Pardo Hills as site for a memorial to those who died during the war. A city street is likewise named in honor of her husband, Don Matias.
