CEBU, Philippines – Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes opened last night the "House of Santa Claus" at the City Hall Plaza, marking the start of the festivities for the holiday season.
Cortes, in a statement, said it is a tradition for Mandaue to hold a display of colorful Christmas lights and decors every year "to enable the people to experience joy this Christmas and remind us to think of others when we think of Christmas."
The mayor said the Christmas festivities at the plaza will also "allow the people" of Mandaue to feel the spirit of Christmas while strolling around the area.
He said it is normal for Filipinos to feel glad when surrounded by the sparkling lights of Christmas, and that is exactly why the city brings this program each year, for the city folks to enjoy. It will be opened to the public for free the whole month.
Last night, Cortes also lit the giant Christmas tree, decorated with various colorful designs, still at the plaza. Several lanterns made by residents were also featured. (FREEMAN)
