CEBU, Philippines – An alternative route is now ready for motorists and the riding public in Lapu-Lapu City during the Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines on August 2.
This as organizers and traffic enforcers will close a major road to give way to runners and bikers.
Assistant city engineer Maribeth Soroño told reporters that the Sangi road in Barangay Pajo is "already passable" after it was closed for road construction. The road will serve as an alternate route for motorists affected by the triathlon competition.
The city government spent P3.5 million for Sangi road's first phase of concreting. The rest of the road was concreted by the Department of Public Works and Highways.
Frank Brazil of the City Traffic Management Systems, however, is certain that the prestigious triathlon race will not cause traffic disturbance since traffic advisories are given out before the main event.
The swim-bike-run race within the cities of Lapu-Lapu, Mandaue and Cebu will be participated in by more than 2,000 athletes from around the world.
The Kabesang Tasyo road in Barangay Punta Engaño to M.L. Quezon National Highway up to the junction of Marcelo B. Fernan Bridge will be closed from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The run course in Barangay Punta Engaño will not be opened until 5 p.m.
Tourists, hotel guests, residents and motorists who plan to go out on the day of the event are advised to leave before the road is closed. They can take the Mactan-Marigondon-Basak road in going to their destinations.
Those going to the Mactan-Cebu International Airport are advised to take the Sitio Sangi Motumbo road in Pajo at the back of the Lapu-Lapu City Hall.
All trailer trucks, tourist buses and other vehicles with gross weight of 4.5 tons and above will be barred to travel in the city during the event.
