Suicide try at bridge foiled

Flor Z. Perolina - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines – An 18-year-old woman who earlier attempted to kill herself by slashing her left wrist was rescued by the police after trying to jump off Marcelo Fernan Bridge last Sunday afternoon.

The woman is temporarily living in Sitio Highland, Barangay Umapad, Mandaue City with her boyfriend identified as Bob Collomar.

Based on police investigation, both victim and her live-in partner were having an argument before the incident took place.

During their quarrel, Collomar reportedly told the victim to leave their house and this prompted the woman to leave and go to a fishpond near the Mandaue Bridge Park located under the bridge were she slashed her left wrist around 5 p.m.

Luckily, somebody who witnessed the slashing immediately reported it to Ireneo Baclohan and Glenn Glenn, members of the Janitorial and Security Services Unit of Mandaue City Hall who were both detailed to secure the place.

Later at around 6 p.m., a group of bikers descending and heading towards Mandaue City reported to Baclohan and Cabido that they saw a woman leaning on the railings on top of the bridge with a cut in her left hand and was bleeding.

Baclohan and Cabido immediately went up the bridge and later spotted the woman wearing a white shirt and short pants, as described by the bikers.

The two just pretended they were jogging but as soon as they reached the victim's spot, they grabbed her immediately before she could jump.

The woman was hesitant to go with them at first but was later convinced. She was turned over to Opao Police Station.

The victim was then brought by police to Mandaue City Hospital for medical treatment.

Police learned that she was a native of Ginatilan town in southern Cebu but was living with her aunt in Barangay Basak, Lapu-Lapu City. When she met Collomar early last year, she then came to live with him.
