Talisay to mark 14th Charter Day anniversary

CEBU, Philippines - Talisay City will celebrate its 14th Charter Day anniversary tomorrow but with no fanfare.

Mayor Johnny De los Reyes issued an executive order declaring a non-working holiday for City Hall employees and no classes in the entire city.

A Mass will be celebrated at 6:30 in the morning at the City Hall, which will be followed by the flag-raising ceremony.

City information officer Vince Monterde said after the Mass, the celebration will be followed by a clean-up drive to be headed by the mayor's wife, Myrna De los Reyes, in Barangay Bulacao going to Barangays Tabunok, Lagtang and Lawaan.

Monterde said there will be no big event or any activities during the Charter Day celebration. 

Talisay was converted into a city in December 2000, but has opted to celebrate its Charter Day anniversary every January 12.

Still, despite its status as a city, it continues to commemorate its founding day celebration as town every August 16.

Talisay, through a bill authored by former congressman Eduardo Gullas which turned into RA 8979, became a city in 2000.

Gullas was its first city mayor after being elected into office in the May 2001 elections.  (FREEMAN)
