2 drivers detained after freak accident hurts 10

CEBU, Philippines – At least 10 people were wounded when a public utility jeepney and a water tanker collided along the corner of M.L. Quezon and M.C. Briones streets in Barangay Maguikay, Mandaue City. The incident happened past midnight yesterday.

PO2 Rolando Estorgio of Mandaue Traffic Division said they arrested the drivers of both vehicles after he found out during investigation that their negligence had both contributed to the accident.

Initial investigation disclosed that the PUJ driven by Lemuel Duran entered a “no entry zone” when it was bumped by the Isuzu Fuzo water tanker driven by Rodrigo Andaya of Bais, Negros oriental.

According to the traffic investigator, the PUJ was on its way to Cebu City while the water tanker was on its way to Lapu-Lapu City when the accident happened.

As a result of the collision, the PUJ turned upside down due to the impact and all of the 10 passengers were injured. Some of the injured passengers were brought to Mandaue City Hospital and others were brought to hospitals in Cebu City.

The injured were identified as Debbie Jame Ingam, 22, of Barangay Mabolo, Cebu city; Jessa Mae Armicin, 20, of Talamban, Cebu City; Rolando Rago, 37, of Kinasang-an, Pardo; Pamela Rago, 27, of Kinasang-an, Pardo; John Denver Rago, 5, of Kinasang an, Pardo; Jerry Aguipo, 33, of Tayud, Consolacion; Stephen John Talada, 19, of Lahug, Cebu City; Judelyn Taboc, 27, of Pardo, Cebu City; Jamilito Vueva,30, of Catarman, Liloan town; and Rolando Ygot, 25, of Jagobiao, Mandaue City.

Both drivers are currently detained at the Casuntingan Police Station pending the filing of charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple physical injuries in the court. – JRS
