Walk for a Cause set for Oct. 28

CEBU, Philippines - The Talisay City government has set October 28 for its annual Alay Lakad or Walk for a Cause 2014.

City Councilor Richard Francis Aznar yesterday said the Alay Lakad Foundation is looking at once again raising some P250,000 in donations in an attempt to support more scholars and livelihood projects for the youth under the program.

Currently, the city's Alay Lakad Foundation sends 288 indigent students to Talisay City College.

"The Alay Lakad Foundation is one of the major programs of the City of Talisay for the less fortunate families and deserving students. It has produced more than 500 graduates since it was created," Aznar said.

Aznar said the city was able to raise P210,000 last year but they are hopeful they can surpass this with a target of P250,000 this year.

"As part of our effort to support their noble work, the City of Talisay is humbly requesting for additional funds to support the program which would help more than hundreds of deserving students enrolled in the said institution," read the resolution read, which the council approved in last Tuesday's regular session.

Out from the amount raised from the Alay Lakad, the scholars are receiving P2,000 per semester.

Now on its 42nd year, the theme for this year's walk is "Lakad para sa Kinabukasan." The Walk for a Cause aims to support out-of-school youths nationwide.

Alay-Lakad Para sa Kabataan was created by Presidential Proclamation No. 168. Government officials, local government units, socio-civic organization, business groups and concerned citizens have participated in this nationwide activity. — Garry B. Lao (FREEMAN)
