Hammock ‘strangles’ baby

CEBU, Philippines -  An 11-month-old baby girl was found lifeless and strangled in a net hammock while she was left under the care of her 15-year-old sibling Wednesday evening in their residence in Barangay Pajac, Lapu-Lapu City.

The death of the baby was personally discovered by her mother Evelyn Bisnar, 38, who just arrived from work at around 10:30 p.m. Thursday. Evelyn works as a machine operator while her husband is a construction worker.

It was learned that the family did not have their own househelp and left the care of the baby most of the time to their eldest daughter. Police investigation revealed that when the mother got home, she proceeded right away to her children's bedroom to check if the baby was awake.

But as she came to check, she noticed it didn't move.  She was surprised to see that the net hammock was strangled to the neck of the baby so she immediately rushed the baby to Mactan Doctor's Hospital but the attending physician declared it dead.

A strangulation mark was found on the baby's neck and parents believed it was the hammock that strangled the baby. Police ruled that the incident was purely accidental as they found no foul play on the baby's death. (FREEMAN)
